The Wheelchair Accessible Hotel Checklist Most Travel Agents Don't Know to Use
"We're ADA compliant" is one of the least useful sentences in accessible travel planning. It's a legal floor, not a promise that the room will actually work for the traveler in front of you. Keep reading for the checklist we teach travel advisors to use instead.
Why "Accessible" and "Usable" Are Different Questions
A hotel can meet every applicable accessibility code and still have a platform bed too high for a safe transfer in and out of bed, a roll-in shower with a lip that means a person can’t use the shower, or an elevator too small for a large power wheelchair. Compliance describes a legal minimum. Usability describes whether a specific traveler, your traverler, with their specific piece of equipment, can move through the space safely and independently.
What to Verify Before You Book
Door width — 32" minimum for power wheelchairs, 36"+ preferred
Roll-in shower versus tub with grab bars, these are not interchangeable
Shower bench type: fold-down, fixed, or none at all
Bed height and whether the frame or box spring can be removed if it's too high
Toilet height and grab bar placement
Distance from accessible parking to the accessible entrance
Pool lift availability, if relevant
Elevator dimensions, especially for large power wheelchairs
Evaluate the Whole Property, Not Just the Room
A perfectly usable bathroom means very little if the route to reach it — the hallway, the elevator, the lobby — creates a barrier along the way. Travel Ready™ trained advisors evaluate arrival and parking, the lobby and check-in, the path to the room, the room itself, and every amenity space the traveler plans to use, as one connected experience.
Who to Ask, and What to Ask For
Always request the accessibility coordinator or rooms division manager, not the general reservations line. And always ask for a current photo of the actual accessible room, not a stock image from the property's marketing materials. A short, specific verification call catches problems no listing description ever will.
